Description:

Looking from the head of Churchills up
the Clifford Glide towards the Cliff Pool

Looking down the stream
from The Pot to the Cliff Pool

At the bend, the water gets deep on our side, but far out towards the cliff is a shallow rocky shelf, which is extremely snaggy. It is best to miss out this section & move just around the bend. Just below the Cliff Pool is a fast glide, shelving from shallow on our side to deeper out under the far bank. This can be fished by all methods, but floated shrimp can be particularly successful here, fishing at 4-5' deep.

This glide continues on under the trees under the far bank, and the last rock on the far bank marks the point where the river widens.  It passes a large rock underwater close to the far bank & then shelves into a very deep pool (14 ft. plus), which is best fished with spinner or floated shrimp.  This is a superb holding pool in the later part of the season. The tail of this pool is also an excellent holding spot for spring fish. Worming is extremely difficult here due to the snags. From this point you cannot wade on any further, & you have to go out & around the trees to come back in half-way down the pool.

From here, you can go out into the field & continue on down into the bottom field. At the tail of the trees, the river vees into a fast run. On our side, the bank is high & you should be cautious not to spook the fish with the sun behind you. It is possible to fish from the top of the bank or from the spots where you can get down, & the run can be fished with spinner, worm or shrimp.  It also fishes well with the fly, though overhead casting is not possible here due to the high bank behind. In low water, you can go down the bank & wade all the way down under the bank to the trees below.

From the top of this run down to the bend below, we also have the fishing on the opposite bank. This is the top section of Wood Stream Beat, and you may see other Lodge guest fishing the opposite side. In this case, please follow the fishing etiquette as set out in the Fishery Rules at the front of this folder, especially if the anglers opposite are fishing fly.  From the tail of this run, much of the bank is covered by trees down toward the bottom limit marked by the wall just above the bend in the river. There are one or two gaps where it is well worth while fishing with spinner, worm or shrimp.
