Description:
Lower Kilmurry is the beat situated
between Inchinleama downstream & Upper Kilmurry upstream. The entrance is
via Upper Kilmurry. Vehicular
access is through the gate on the main road by the sycamore tree, which has a
sign marking the Upper Kilmurry Beat entrance.
Go down the track across the field & park by the Fishing Hut.
Continue
downstream along the edge of the field past the Fishing Hut.
Continue past the second Hut right down to the corner of the field.
Go over the stile out on to the river bank at the tail of the Green Bank.
If you wish to leave your tackle/lunch etc. in the Hut, continue on round
the bend where the Lug Pool swings to the left.
The Hut is under the trees on the left.
![]() The Run into the Lug Pool |
The Upper Limit of the beat is at
the tail of the Green Bank above - just where it breaks
into the fast water just above the large boulder croy. This run flows over a shallow stony bottom and gradually deepens as it goes down into the Lug Pool. It begins at a couple of feet deep, & goes down to about 10 feet at the tail of the pool. The pool is split by a submerged sand bar down the middle. Fish mostly run from the middle to close into our bank (so don't wade far in ). About one third of the way out in the Top Run, there are several rocks which create a line of slack water, through which a fly (& spun shrimp) fishes particularly well in low/medium water, as does a worm & also a spinner in higher water. |
| Below the Run, the main current
flows down into the Lug Pool, splits at the far bank, one
part turning into the back eddy under the Kilbarry bank,
& the other part flowing under the far bank down
towards the Island. In low water, this straight is slow moving, and can best be fished with a floated shrimp or worm. In high water, from the Hut down to just above the Island can be extremely productive with spinner, especially in the Spring, & later in the year especially if there is colour in the water, as it is shallower here & fish can see a bait easier. The bottom in this area is covered in large rocks providing plenty of lies (& snags !!!!!). Above the Island, the water is shallow - a great spot for running fish (particularly springers) in high water. |

![]() The Island Stream. |
The Island Stream which extends
below the Island is one of the best fly streams on the
whole river. The higher the water, the longer the Stream. It is a stream of fast broken water, with a gravel & stone bottom. A fly works beautifully in this Stream, as does a worm, especially at the Wooden Railings below the Island, where larger rocks provide excellent lies for a resting fish. It is an excellent stream for running fish, as they rest before running up past the Island. |
| Do NOT wade far out, as fish lie close in.
Wading over to the Island to fish towards the far bank is
not allowed. The depth of this Stream varies from 1-5 feet. When fish are running, a spinner can have great results at any time of the year, especially an upstream Flying Condom fished from below & cast up to the fast water at the point of the Island, & retrieved very fast downstream. Below the Island, the river straightens out down to the Bottom Boundary, where our Bank ends at the fence. When the water is higher, spinning or worming all down this stretch and particularly near the Bottom Boundary, can produce a fish. In low water, much of it can be waded & fished with the fly. |
