Description:

Discussing tactics at the Hut Pool.
(Looking upstream into the Half River)

At the bottom of the Island is the Hut Pool.

On our bank is a gravel beach, so wading & casting is very easy. It is here that we usually conduct our left bank speycasting instruction.

The river flows out of the Ladder, & down over a couple of lines of rocks which break up the fast stream which leads into the Hut Pool.

This pool was improved in the Spring of 1993, by putting in the rocks at the head, & deepening & widening the run to give more holding water, & provide a resting spot for moving fish.

The slack water under the trees which overhang from the Island can be an excellent lie to be fished with any method.

It is an excellent pool, particularly for the fly, & the deepest part is around 6 feet along the line between the current & the slack water under the trees on the Island.

This is superb fly water, & also excellent for spinning (both upstream & across & down) & worming.

Looking up the Sand Gap to the tail of the Hut Pool.

At the Tail of the Hut Pool, the flow on our side is joined by the stream flowing around the other side of the Island. Below the confluence of the streams, the current then shallows over solid rock, & on into a glide with some deep pockets, an excellent area for picking fish up on the fly in low water, & spinner in higher water. The deepest part is the third of the river on our side from just below the croy down to the tail of the grassy bank. This is also an excellent place for trout fishing.
The stream then heads in towards our bank, under a high & rather inaccessible bank. This is not good holding water.
Walk out into the field & on to the stile leading into the flat known as the Green Bank below. This is good for spinning in high water & also for floated shrimp, especially later in the season.
Half way down the Green Bank, opposite the small tree on the far bank, there is a deeper hole in the centre of the river with some large rocks on the bottom. This is a very good spring lie, fished with spinner or worm, as well as with a shrimp in the summer. Just above this, there are a number of rocks just out from our bank, & floating a shrimp outside these in low water can be very productive. Fish the Green Bank from the bank only, as the water is too deep to wade. The depth goes down to 6 feet in places here. In higher water, at any time of the year, a fish can be taken almost anywhere along the Green Bank. Particularly good is the tail of the flat where the water shallows, especially if there is colour in the water.

The river then begins to shallow up as it gets nearer the corner, where it enters the Lug Pool on Lower Kilmurry Beat.
Upper Kilmurry Beat ends at the tail of the glide above this Pool, at the pile of rocks above the large dead tree.
