Section 1

Description:
At the bottom of the lane (where it turns left towards the farm), you
will see a tree-lined hedge on your right with a gate & a track on either
side. Go through the second gate (after the hedge) & follow the track to the
old disused farmyard. Park in the yard & walk straight down the field
towards the river.
The hedge to your left marks the downstream limit of the beat. The beat
extends upstream for the whole of the field.
The upstream limit is marked by the boundary wall at the top of the
field.
Otherwise, when
you walk up towards the boundary, you will see a path to your left which takes
you towards the river at the head of the Top Run. This is an excellent piece of
fly & light spin fishing in low/medium water. It can also fish well with
worm or spun shrimp. The bank is rather marshy for some distance, but you can
wade in front of the reeds in low water. Be cautious at the very top of the run
as it is quite deep.
This stretch can be waded almost all the way down to the bend, and it is
lovely ripply water for fly fishing or light spinning in low/medium water. A
little way above the bend, there is a deep pocket on our side, which means that
you have to take the path back out into the field, & go on downstream to
come back in just above the bend.
From the top of this section down to the bend below, we also have the
fishing on the opposite bank. This is the bottom section of Ballincurrig Beat,
and you may see other Lodge guests fishing the opposite side. In this case,
please follow the fishing etiquette as set out in the Fishery Rules at the front
of this folder.
The Bend and on down into the flat below is superb fly water. You are
fishing from the shallow side of the river out to the deeper water under the
steep, heavily wooded bank on the far side. It is readily waded from above the
Bend, though you cannot go too far out. Fish lie in the deeper water out under
the far bank. There are a number of rocks & trees in the water under the far
bank, which require cautious casting, but which provide great shelter for the
salmon. It also fishes well with spinner and spun shrimp. Worming is frustrating
due to the snags. This is also a superb section for trout fishing.
The Wood Flat can be fished with the fly all the way down. Wading is easy
over gravel. Again, you are fishing out to the deeper water (4 - 5') under the
far bank. It is also good for spinning & spun or particularly floated
shrimp. Again, worming is difficult, but can be productive in higher water. This
flat is also excellent spinning in higher water, particularly towards the tail.
