Click on the links above to see detailed information and photos of the various individual beats.
Each beat page has a copy of the beat map & pool by pool descriptions. More will be added as soon as possible.

These pages give you an idea of the depth and detail of the information that we provide our guests on their allocated beat for their day's fishing with us.

Guests are provided with two plastic laminated maps:

- detailed route map of how to get to the beat
- Beat map with the beat description on the reverse side (description is the same as in these pages).

The Blackwater Lodge has totally exclusive fishing rights on an enviable selection of the best beats on this superb salmon river.
Our beats have been carefully chosen to offer anglers a variety of fast water, flats & deep pools to suit all fishing methods.

The huge extent of our fishery means that we can follow the runs of salmon from the lower beats in low water conditions to the upper river
when they run through in high water. This unique fishery extends from 3 miles downstream to 28 miles upstream from the Lodge.

A car is essential due to the extent of the river covered by our fishery. Alternatively, we can arrange transport to the Lodge and a gillie to take you to the beats.

New for 2011 - Fly-Only Sections
To better serve the needs of fly anglers, all beats will have certain sections to be Fly Only at river heights below a designated level.
More information on this will be available shortly on the site, but this will include:

Ballygally: From the Top Croy to the tail of the Boulder Stream.
Ballinlovane: Cloonbeg Stream and the Head of the Planks to the Cattle Drink.
Ballinaroone: The Castle Stream and The Road Pool.
Kents: From the Head of the Island Stream down to the Head of Gormans Pool & the Boulder Stream.
Lower Kilmurry: From the Upper Limit to the Lug Pool and the Island Stream to the Third Ladder.

  • Fishery Size & Extent
15 beats averaging approx. ¾ mile each in length.
The top beat is 28 miles (45 km) upstream from the Lodge.
The bottom beat is 3 miles (5 km) downstream
(within 3 miles of the tidal limit at Lismore).

  • No over-crowding.
We seldom allow more than two rods per beat (fly-only)
    or four rods (all methods).

  • Wading is very easy, mostly over an even gravel bottom.

  • Sunday Fishing is allowed (unlike Scotland).

  • Daily beat rotation. You fish a different beat each day.

  • Your beat is selected from the best beats available considering the
prevailing river and weather conditions, and the number of rods fishing.

  • In peak weeks, your allocated beat alternates between the upper & lower half
of the river in order to ensure that all guests enjoy an equal variety of sport.

  • You are allocated your beat in the evening for the following day.
Detailed route and beat maps, together with a beat description
(all laminated in plastic) are provided to take to the river.
A folder of aerial photos is also available for study in the Lodge.
