For the non-fishing guests
Whilst we are primarily a Fishing Lodge, even
we have to admit that sometimes it is necessary (or wise!) to
bring the wife, family or girl-friend for the sake of peace &
harmony at home (and the chance to go fishing again!).
Our location is at the heart of many of the key tourist spots of
the south & south-east, so there is plenty to occupy them if
they do not wish to spend the day on the river bank with you
whilst you are fishing.
The Lodge is an informal establishment where everyone can feel at home. Wine & dine your loved one in our cosy restaurant, where our chef creates his appetising Table d'Hôte menu from the freshest local produce.
The Blackwater valley is one of the most
beautiful in the whole of Ireland. Not the rugged spectacular
scenery of Kerry & Connemara, but wonderful rolling
countryside & mountainous areas close by.
It is superb unspoilt countryside, with the added advantage that
it is not far from civilisation. You are never far away from
shopping centres, whether it is for food if you are
self-catering, crystal if you collect Waterford glass, or Aran
Jumpers if you want to visit the world-famous Blarney Woollen
Mills & kiss the Blarney stone at the same time!
We are situated only 1½ miles (2,6 km) from
the village of Ballyduff, which has 4 pubs, 3
shops, a Post Office & a garage.
The Heritage town of Lismore is only 6 miles
downstream, with its superb castle & gardens, magnificent
Cathedral (1633) & Heritage centre. There are also a number
of shops & small supermarkets. Try the spectacular drive from
Lismore Bridge up the valley of the Owenashad river to the Vee -
a pass through the Knockmealdown Mountains giving a wonderful
panoramic views over County Tipperary.
Cappoquin is a small town 10 miles downstream
& from there there is a wonderful scenic drive for about 12
miles down the estuary of the Blackwater. This ends at mouth of
the Blackwater at Youghal - an ancient fishing port where Sir
Walter Raleigh was once Lord Mayor.
There are plenty of safe sandy beaches along the coast all the
way from Youghal, past Dungarvan & Tramore & on to
Waterford which is only 50 miles (80 km) away. The best are at
Youghal, Ardmore & Strabally. There is funfair at Youghal
& Leisure Park in Tramore.
The thriving market town of Fermoy is only 9½
miles (15 km) upstream - a good shopping centre with larger
supermarkets, swimming pool, & plenty of shops & pubs.
Visit the famous Jameson Whiskey
Heritage Centre at Midleton, which only ½ hour drive
from the Lodge.
Cork City is only 30 miles away, and Blarney
with the famous Stone to be kissed in the Castle & the
Woollen Mills.
Waterford is of course the home of the famous
Crystal Glass factory (tours).
Kilkenny, a magnificent Heritage town, is only
about 1½ hours drive away.
Killarney, gateway to the famous Ring of
Kerry, is only 75 miles (120 km) away. Count on a full
day trip if you wish to do the circuit of the Ring from the
Lodge.
Other places well worth a visit in the area
are:-
Mitchelstown Caves
Castles: The Rock of Cashel, Cahir & Kilkenny to name but a
few.
Activities in the Surrounding Area.
There are plenty of Golf Courses in the
surrounding area, & a couple of Driving Ranges and Pitch & Putt near Fermoy.
There are a number of riding & trekking centres not far away.
